To meet the demands of pearl jewelry makers, the pearl industry started producing a pearl called the freshwater pearl. Cultured from freshwater mussels, the process began in 1914 by the Japanese in Lake Biwa, near Kyoto. The lake is large and old, and has since become well known for its production of Biwa pearls. At the peak of the freshwater pearl industry, the Lake Biwa farmers were culturing over six tons of pearls per year.
Since 1914 the popularity of the freshwater pearl has increased, since it is less costly than natural, saltwater pearls. Farming for freshwater pearls is also less dangerous, making it easier to mass produce.
Recent leaders in freshwater pearl production have been China, which has cultured over 1,500 metric tons in a year, and the United States, starting in the 1960's. The past few years, however, has seen a large decrease in the production of freshwater pearls. |
