Trying to chase up my passport after being sent off

I sent my app off about 3 weeks ago now for a basic renewal service but i have not heard anything yet. I was told in the post office it should take about 2-3 weeks but nothing has been heard. One of my friends said this is a good thing though because they will only get in touch if there is a problem with the application. I wish they had some sort of passport renewal status checker on their site or something. I know that with Irish passport apps you can do this which makes life a lot easier. I am rushing a bit because i need this passport back by next week so i can travel at the weekend with it. I can't go anywhere without it so it is getting a bit desperate now. I have been phoning the office to see what's going on but they can never tell me anything. I may end up having to go into the office in person and speak to someone to get some straight answers.
